Planning holidays to Vietnam from UK travellers often start with the same question: where do you begin in a country that packs buzzing cities, limestone bays, ancient towns and mountain valleys into one long, narrow shape? Vietnam rewards travellers who slow down and pick a route rather than trying to see everything at once. This guide covers the places that matter most, the best times to travel, and the practical details UK visitors need before booking.

Why Vietnam Works So Well for a UK Holiday

Vietnam offers an unusual combination for a long-haul trip: a low cost of living once you arrive, food that is famous worldwide, and a range of landscapes that changes completely from north to south. Hanoi in the north feels different from Ho Chi Minh City in the south, and the countryside between them holds some of the most photographed scenery in Asia. For UK travellers used to European city breaks, Vietnam is a step up in adventure without being difficult to travel around. Internal flights are frequent, trains run the length of the country, and organised tours are easy to arrange if you prefer not to plan every leg yourself.

Vietnam also pairs well with other Southeast Asian trips. Many travellers combine it with trips to Thailand packages or add a stop in Malaysia or Singapore on the way home. If island time appeals, a twin-centre break with the Philippines is another popular option, while an Indonesia tour suits travellers who want volcanoes and temples alongside beaches.

    Best Time to Visit Vietnam

Vietnam is long and thin, so the weather is never the same everywhere at once. As a rough rule, the north is coolest from November to April and hot and wet in summer, the centre is driest from January to August, and the south is warm all year with a rainy season roughly from May to October. There is no single perfect month for the whole country, which is why most itineraries focus on one or two regions rather than racing from end to end.

For a first trip, February to April and September to November tend to give the most comfortable mix: pleasant temperatures in Hanoi and the north, settled weather in the centre, and manageable rain in the south. If Halong Bay is a priority, aim for the drier months when the limestone islands are clearest. If you want to see the rice terraces at their greenest, late summer in the northern mountains is the time, even if it brings some rain.

    Where to Go in Vietnam

    Hanoi and Halong Bay

Start in Hanoi, a city of lakes, French-colonial streets and famously chaotic traffic that somehow works. The Old Quarter is best explored on foot, with street food stalls, coffee shops and markets at every turn. From Hanoi, Halong Bay is the classic side trip: an overnight cruise among limestone karsts rising from calm water. Book a reputable operator, check what is included, and allow a full day or two rather than rushing it as a day trip.

    Hoi An and Central Vietnam

Hoi An is the town most visitors fall for. Its lantern-lit old town, tailors, riverside restaurants and nearby beaches make it an easy place to slow down for several days. Hue, the former imperial capital, adds citadels and tombs for history lovers, and the Hai Van Pass drive between Hue and Da Nang is one of the great road journeys in Asia. Central Vietnam is also where beach resorts cluster, so it works well as the relaxing middle of a longer trip.

Ho Chi Minh City and the South

Ho Chi Minh City, still called Saigon by many locals, is faster, louder and more modern than Hanoi. Museums covering the war years sit alongside markets, rooftop bars and some of the best food in the country. From here, day trips reach the Cu Chi tunnels and the Mekong Delta, where life revolves around rivers, floating markets and orchards. The southern beaches of Phu Quoc island are the usual wind-down at the end of a tour.

    Sapa and the Northern Mountains

If you have time, head north to Sapa, where terraced valleys and hill-tribe villages offer trekking that ranges from gentle walks to serious multi-day hikes. A local guide is worth it here, both for navigation and for understanding village life respectfully. Pack layers: mountain mornings can be cool even when Hanoi is hot.

    Food in Vietnam

Vietnamese food is one of the strongest reasons to visit. Pho, the noodle soup found everywhere, tastes different in every region, and banh mi, the filled baguette, makes a perfect walking lunch. Street food is central to the experience, and the safest stalls are usually the busiest ones with high turnover. Coffee culture deserves its own mention: Vietnamese iced coffee, made with condensed milk, is strong, sweet and addictive, and the egg coffee served in Hanoi is a local speciality worth seeking out.

Travellers with dietary needs should learn a few key phrases or carry a printed card in Vietnamese. Vegetarian food is available, especially around Buddhist temples, but fish sauce appears in many dishes, so clear communication matters. As with any food trip, it helps to read up on eating well abroad before you go; our Borneo holiday guide also covers jungle lodges and wildlife for travellers who want to extend a Southeast Asian adventure.

    Practical Tips for UK Travellers

Flights from the UK to Vietnam usually take around 11 to 12 hours direct, or longer with a stop in the Middle East or another Asian hub. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the main gateways, and internal flights make it easy to cover long distances quickly. Entry rules change from time to time, so check the current visa and passport requirements for UK citizens before you book, and make sure your passport has enough validity left for the trip.

Money is straightforward: the local currency is the dong, ATMs are common in cities and towns, and cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants, though cash still rules in markets and rural areas. Travel insurance that covers medical care and trip changes is essential for a long-haul holiday, and vaccinations should be discussed with your GP or a travel clinic well before departure. Pack light, breathable clothes, a rain layer, and comfortable walking shoes; modest dress is appreciated at temples and pagodas.

    Planning Your Vietnam Holiday

A classic first itinerary gives Vietnam about two weeks: a few days in Hanoi and Halong Bay, a flight south to central Vietnam for Hoi An and Hue, then on to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. Shorter trips should pick one region and enjoy it properly rather than spending the whole holiday in transit. Tour operators offer everything from fully guided group tours to tailor-made private trips, and a mix of guided days and independent days often works best.

Whatever shape your trip takes, book the long-haul flights and Halong Bay cruise early, keep some days flexible for weather changes, and leave room for the unplanned discoveries that make Vietnam memorable: a family-run restaurant down a Hanoi alley, a sunrise over the bay, or a quiet beach in the centre that you almost skipped. Vietnam rewards travellers who arrive curious and unhurried, and it is a destination many UK visitors return to again and again.
